5 Unexpected Foods with Hidden Dairy

Hunting_for_hidden_lactose
I can't tell you how many times it's happened; I was positive I hadn't eaten any dairy then those all-too-familiar symptoms started. And to top it off, it always seemed to happen at the most inopportune time, like a business dinner.

After a lot of research I've narrowed down a few of the foods hiding lactose and dairy products. This list is by no means complete and I'll keep posting others.

The best way to be sure is to check the ingredient list. Oh, and take it from my own personal experience, you'll want to check the ingredient list everytime, even if you're picking up your favorite foods. You never know when a manufacturer will change their recipe.

1-cereal

Cereals
That quick breakfast we've all come to rely on may contain whey or dried milk.

2-white-breadBread
Whey and other milk products are added to a lot of commercial breads as preservatives and tenderizers.

Margarine
It's surprising but most margarines contain quite a lot of dairy.

One of my favorite
non-dairy products is Earth Balance Buttery Sticks.

4-whippedtoppingWhipped Topping
Ever wonder why it's richer & creamier? You guessed it. Here is a good reason to always check the ingredients. What was once dairy-free now contains milk.

5-hotdogsHot Dogs
That's right, this classic grilling favorite can be hiding lactose and dairy products. Check the label or reach for the kosher dogs.

My go-to-wiener is Hebrew National Reduced Fat Beef Franks.

What foods have you found that hide lactose or milk products?
