Munich + Christmas = Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Markets)
Christkindlmarkt + cold weather = Glühwein
Glühwein + brandy = Glühwein Cordial
1 orange
1 lemon
4 cups red wine
1 cup (220 grams) granulated sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
4 whole cloves or 1/4 teaspoons ground cloves
1 cup brandy
Remove the outer rind of the orange and lemon with a vegetable peeler, taking care to not remove the white pith. Place in a large saucepan. Squeeze the juice from orange and lemon into the pan. Add all the ingredients except the brandy and place over low heat. Heat mixture, but DO NOT BOIL, for 1 hour. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Cover and let stand at room temperature for 24 hours.
Strain and discard solids. Stir in brandy and refrigerate at least 1 week. Serve cold or over ice.
