Great Moments in Food
When tasty things take me by surprise!
At the Munich train station (hauptbahnhof) is a bakery catering to morning commuters and tourists. I didn't hold high hopes for it but at the early morning hour we were there to catch a train to Salzburg our choices were limited.
Since it was Christmas time there was a plethera of Lebkuchen (gingerbread) in many shapes and forms, as well as cakes, tarts and breads. We bought a bunch of things, even though we had no clue what they were. We also got what we thought were a couple of croissants, just in case we didn't like anything else we tried.
As we were pulling out of the station and munching on everything we purchased, we found out the "croissants" weren't really croissants but kind of a light, airy pretzel, and frankly they were best of the bunch. The outside was very salty and crunchy, just like a pretzel but the inside was moist and flaky like a croissant. It was amazing!
Before we left Germany we went back about 3 more times to pick up some. By the way, they're also really good if you slip a bratwurst inside them, which they happen to sell at the stall next door.
Ok, looks wonderful. But where's the recipe?!?!?! I want to try these babies.

I love this! My husband and I were in Munich 4 months ago visiting family and "discovered" the very same thing! I'm having my aunt overnight me a dozen for Christmas morning.
